How to prepare for the PMP Exam

E-mail Print PDF

  1. Register yourself at http://www.pmi.org.
  2. I will suggest to become PMI member. There are two benefits for becoming a member of PMI.
    • Reading material - You will be getting PM Magazines as well as you will get access to huge eLearning material online.
    • Economical - The exam fee is $555 for non members and $405 for members, that’s a difference of $150 in the exam fees alone.
  3. Review the application process.
  4. Take print of the application form and read it properly.
  5. Collect your project data. We need to enter the hours spent on each process of the project. There is a template developed by many people on net to help the candidates fill the project detail. One such site is http://www.brisbin.name/worksheet/
  6. You will require 4500 hours of project experience (non-overlapping).
  7. Set yourself a target date and schedule the exam.
  8. Unlearn what ever you have learnt till date about project management. PMP tests your knowledge in different situations. You might have good experience in project management and you might be following a methodology in your company but for the exam purpose what PMBOK 3rd edition says will be the most correct and not what do think.
  9. There are many books available online and in the market which claim to help you pass the exam. Whatever they claim , finally you have to prepare and appear on the exam.  But don't ignore PMBOK.
  10. I will suggest to buy PMP Exam Prep by Rita Mulcahy and PMP FAST Track software by Rita. Both these are available on Rita's site http://www.rmcproject.com/
  11. Read PMBOK and PMP Exam Prep by Rita at least once before you go for 36 hours required training.
  12. After the training once again read both the books and take the exam from PMP FAST Track by knowledge area.
  13. At the end , take the practice test from PMP FAST Track.
  14. If you are scoring more than 80% in the practice test, you are ready for the exam.
  15. There are many practice exams available on the internet. One of the practice exam by PM Study is supposed o be good.
  16. Now go and appear in the exam.
